Germany says any decision on a 2026 World Cup boycott rests with the DFB and FIFA, amid domestic calls to shun the tournament over Donald Trump's stance.

Le Figaro reports that on Tuesday Claude Le Roy also raised the prospect of a boycott, criticising Trump's attitude towards Africa.

Christiane Schenderlein, the German sports state secretary, said the assessment belongs to the relevant federations, namely the DFB and FIFA, and the federal government would accept their view.

She added that the government respects the autonomy of sport, and that choices on participation in major events or any boycott are the exclusive domain of the competent sporting bodies, not politicians.

The discussion has been sharpened by US ambitions to take control of Greenland and by threats of higher tariffs on European states that oppose the move. In recent days, calls in Germany and elsewhere have even stretched to cancellation of the tournament.
