Germany have set an internal target of reaching the quarter-finals at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, Sky Germany reports.

If Julian Nagelsmann’s side reach the last eight, the DFB would count that as a success. Going further, a first semi-final at a major tournament since the 2014 World Cup would be viewed as a huge success.

This benchmark follows a difficult recent World Cup record for the four-time champions.

In 2018 in Russia, the then holders suffered their first ever group-stage exit.

At Qatar 2022, they were eliminated from Group E, which featured Spain, Japan and Costa Rica.

The stance suggests the federation do not want to place excessive pressure on the team ahead of 2026.
