Orlando Gill was the difference as Paraguay won on penalties in the round of 32, the goalkeeper saving two in the shootout. Deniz Undav, picked after good group-stage displays, struggled to influence the attack.
Enciso forced a corner inside 20 seconds, then headed Paraguay in front on 42 minutes from Galarza’s delivery. Manuel Neuer denied him a second on 50 minutes, before Kai Havertz levelled with a 54th-minute header from a Florian Wirtz cross. Enciso departed injured before the hour, and according to L'Équipe, Gill was marked eight, Galarza seven and Enciso six.
Gill then produced a superb stop to thwart Havertz on 78 minutes. In the shootout, he saved Germany’s opening kick from Havertz and later denied Nick Woltemade, while Jonathan Tah fired over, and Galarza converted.
Many observers had wanted Undav to start, but aside from a half-chance on six minutes he offered little. He was replaced by Jamal Musiala on 63 minutes, who added only brief spark late in extra time. Undav was rated two, as were Nmecha and Sané, with Havertz on five.
Lukas Nmecha endured a poor first half and was withdrawn for Leon Goretzka at the break, having failed to pick up a runner for Enciso’s goal. Leroy Sané tried to carry the fight before fading, then was substituted for Woltemade on 88 minutes. Galarza repeatedly doubled up to contain Sané and recovered 10 balls.
