Steven Gerrard has backed Kobbie Mainoo to walk into the England squad for the World Cup now that he is featuring regularly for Manchester United.
Mainoo has been recalled to the England squad for March’s friendlies with Uruguay and Japan, having last been capped for the Three Lions in September 2024.
The 20-year-old fell out of the picture after struggling for football under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim. However, he has impressed since returning to the side under interim boss Michael Carrick, after Amorim’s exit in January.
Discussing Mainoo, Gerrard sympathised with his status under Amorim and called the former manager’s treatment of the midfielder ‘out of order’. He also backed Mainoo for a prominent role with England this summer.
“I felt really sorry for him [Kobbie Mainoo] in terms of the kid’s career under Amorim,” the former England captain said to TNT Sports.
“I think it was out of order that he never got any opportunity, especially with United being so inconsistent.
“But not surprised that Carrick [started to play him]. I think that was one of the straight wins if you walk into a job, if you like.
“Get Kobbie Mainoo back in, get him smiling, give him game time and minutes, and get him fit and up to the speed where we all know he can play.
“He’s now at a level where he walks in the England squad, never mind Amorim not playing him. He walks into the England squad if he’s playing regularly for Man United.”
