Gianni Infantino confirmed on Thursday in Vancouver that he will stand for re-election as FIFA president in 2027, seeking another four-year term at the 78th Congress.

The 56-year-old Italo-Swiss was elected in 2016 then re-elected in 2019 and 2023. According to L'Équipe, federations have already offered backing for his bid.

FIFA statutes limit presidents to three terms. At the elective congress in 2023 in Kigali, it was officially decided he was starting his second term, as his initial spell from 2016, begun after Sepp Blatter fell amid corruption accusations, was deemed incomplete and does not count towards the cap.

The African and Asian confederations announced their backing on Thursday, giving him 101 of the 211 votes. He already had the 10 South American votes, and each national federation holds one vote.

Infantino has faced numerous controversies, particularly in recent months over his close ties with US President Donald Trump, whom he presented with FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize. The December 2025 award prompted FairSquare to lodge a complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee.
