Gianni Infantino has hit back at criticism after the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, issuing a robust defence on social media. The FIFA president said in a post that a section of supporters had been consumed by hate and constant attacks on him.

He accused detractors of hiding behind pens and screens to spread false rumours, urging them to pause, reflect and watch football.

Infantino highlighted the tournament’s organisation, citing Iran’s participation without major conflict. He noted Iran could not be accommodated in the United States because of the war context and the squad’s frustration, yet said support grew once they started playing.

On refereeing, he sought to normalise contentious calls, arguing that disputed incidents around officials are routine and accepted in some of the world’s major leagues. He claimed the countries that employ such practices are the same ones now criticising them.

He concluded by inviting critics to reflect and meditate, and said he was incredibly proud, as FIFA president, to have helped deliver the spectacle. He added that only football can produce a show where people come together and reconnect as humans.
