Gianni Infantino announced in Vancouver on Thursday that he will stand for re-election as Fifa president in 2027. The declaration comes six weeks before the first 48-team World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
According to Le Progres, the 56-year-old Italo-Swiss drew early backing from federations at the Fifa Congress. He was elected in 2016, then re-elected in 2019 and 2023.
Fifa statutes cap presidents at three terms. The 2023 Kigali Congress ruled he was starting his second, as his first from 2016, after Sepp Blatter’s fall amid corruption accusations, was deemed incomplete.
On Thursday the African and Asian confederations backed him, giving 101 of 211 votes. He already had South America’s 10.
Infantino has faced controversies, including recent criticism over close ties with US president Donald Trump, to whom he gave the first Fifa Peace Prize. The December 2025 award prompted FairSquare to complain to Fifa’s ethics committee.
He has also been criticised for expanding the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams from 2026. His push for a biennial tournament failed.
Fifa revenues are put at 13 billion dollars for the four-year cycle ending after that tournament. For 2027-2030, Fifa plans to distribute about 2.7 billion dollars to members via its Fifa Forward programme, around eight times more than a decade ago.
