As part of plans to create a commercial company, FIFA president Gianni Infantino is considering opening 20% of its capital to private investors, including the family of Donald Trump. According to L'Équipe, he now wants to sell the World Cup.

The Swiss has faced constant controversy since his 2016 election, with a development strategy increasingly centred on commercial and marketing exploitation and profit maximisation.

That approach has also driven a multiplication of competitions, despite an already congested global sporting calendar.

Over the past decade he has introduced a new Club World Cup with 32 teams.

He has also increased the number of World Cup finalists from 32 to 48, at the risk of diminishing the sporting interest of its first phase.
