Ghana international left-back Gideon Mensah, 27, has joined Cologne on a two-year contract after leaving Auxerre at the end of his deal. The Bundesliga side finished 14th last season.
He spent four seasons with Auxerre, making 114 appearances and winning the Ligue 2 title in 2024. The club said in a statement that he was combative, generous and irreproachable on the pitch, and would leave a fine impression with supporters. Auxerre finished 15th in Ligue 1 last season.
Mensah has 44 caps for Ghana and was part of the team that reached the World Cup last 16, losing 1-0 to Colombia.
Auxerre had anticipated his exit, announcing on 8 July the four-year signing of Franco-Ivorian left-back Sékou Fofana, 23, from Lausanne-Sport.
His international experience and recent displays in France and at the World Cup were highlighted, along with a team-first mentality, tactical discipline, solid defending and dynamism. The expectation is that his profile will add stability and quality to the squad.
