Barcelona’s goalkeeping situation has taken another unexpected turn, with a recent report from SPORT revealing that Girona are actively pushing to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen during the January transfer window.
In recent weeks, much of the speculation around Ter Stegen’s future had centred on Aston Villa.
The Premier League side were repeatedly linked with a move for the German goalkeeper, especially given the uncertainty surrounding his role at Barcelona.
However, the reality on the ground is very different, as Aston Villa are not currently in the market for a new goalkeeper.
The Premier League club is satisfied with their existing setup, led by Emiliano Martinez and supported by Marco Bizot. From Villa’s perspective, that position is well covered.
Despite the strong institutional relationship between Barcelona and Aston Villa, it has been confirmed that there are no negotiations underway involving Ter Stegen heading to England. That door, at least for now, is firmly closed.
Instead, Girona have emerged as the most serious and determined suitor.

The La Liga side is reportedly doing everything within their power to convince Ter Stegen to make the move, seeing him as a transformational signing both on and off the pitch.
Relations between Barcelona and Girona are described as excellent, which could play a crucial role if talks advance quickly in January.
From Barcelona’s point of view, the situation remains delicate, as internally, the club recognise that a separation could make sense from both a sporting and financial perspective.
Ter Stegen is one of the highest earners in the squad, and his role has become less secure.
That said, Barça have no intention of forcing out a player who has served the club for years and worn the captain’s armband.
However, external factors may influence the final outcome. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, Ter Stegen’s priority is to have regular playing time.
Without guaranteed minutes at Barcelona, the German international may be forced to rethink his stance, especially if a move within La Liga allows him to stay competitive at the highest level.
