Girondins de Bordeaux have been excluded from all national competitions after failing to provide the nine million euros required by French football’s financial watchdog, the DNCG.

The six-time French champions have lodged an appeal. As it stands, they would have to restart, at best, in Régional 1, the sixth tier, after two seasons in National 2, the fourth.

The club said in a statement that the appeals process would allow it to finalise financing for 2026-27 and present updated documents to an appeals commission expected to meet in about 15 days.

The club remains in a sale process between owner Gérard Lopez and British fund Sparta Capital, which is seeking to take control.

Three routes are being explored to overturn the decision on appeal. Lopez could inject the nine million euros to fund next season, as he did in summer 2023, or Sparta could provide a loan of around 10 million euros. Alternatively, if Bordeaux Métropole meets Sparta’s requests over Stade Atlantique, including lowering the current one million euros rent and granting an option to buy at a secured price, Sparta would move swiftly to a majority stake, which could keep the club at the fourth tier.
