As reported by DiMarzio, Monaco have made an enquiry for Manchester United’s André Onana. While such a move might seem speculative from the Ligue 1 side, it may set in motion a more intriguing shift in the European goalkeeping landscape. Onana, once heralded as a transformational presence for United, has endured a turbulent time in Manchester. “The 29-year-old goalkeeper owned by Manchester United” started 50 matches last season but was never far from the critics’ gaze.
Ten Hag and his successor Ruben Amorim kept faith with the former Inter man, but results, especially the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham, continue to cast shadows.

Should Onana depart Old Trafford, United’s reported interest turns to Atalanta’s Marco Carnesecchi, a name long admired in Serie A circles. As DiMarzio notes, “the profile that Ruben Amorim’s team likes the most is that of Marco Carnesecchi.” The 23-year-old has had a breakout season, featuring 44 times and notching up 18 clean sheets, guiding Atalanta to an impressive third-place finish and another shot at Champions League football.
Contacts have been made with the player’s agent but not yet with Atalanta, “who would hardly be able to let him go unless there were truly satisfactory offers.” Atalanta hold a strong position and know the value of a consistent performer in his prime.
Carnesecchi is no longer simply a ‘keeper with potential. With Europe watching, the young Italian made headlines off the pitch too: “while England is watching him with interest, the Atalanta goalkeeper got married today, Friday 20 June.” It’s a moment of personal joy amidst serious professional intrigue.
Monaco’s move for Onana may fizzle out, but the ripples could be felt far wider. United, no strangers to headline-grabbing transfers, may soon look to reset their backline, and Carnesecchi could be the man they believe in next.
If this move materialises, United fans can be genuinely excited. Onana has had his moments, sure, but consistency wasn’t one of them. Too many lapses in judgement, erratic decisions, and questionable distribution left the fanbase wondering if the club got it right last summer.
Carnesecchi? He’s got pedigree, presence, and promise. Eighteen clean sheets in a Serie A season tells its own story. He’s not just a shot-stopper, he commands the box. United haven’t had a presence like that since the prime David De Gea years.
Of course, fans will be cautious. Atalanta won’t budge easily. But if Onana does go to Monaco, which seems possible now that “Monaco have made an enquiry,” then this is a rare chance for a smart bit of business.
It’s about more than talent now — it’s about mentality and leadership. Carnesecchi looks to have both, and fans will rightly be optimistic that United, after some erratic years in the transfer market, are finally targeting stability in the right way.
