His style is more traditional, less progressive than what United were supposedly prioritising when they went all in on Onana’s distribution qualities.

“Fits the profile” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. If Pope is the answer, are United even asking the right question?

There is also confusion over the plan. Are the club backing Onana long-term or looking to hedge? Because signing Pope signals one of two things: either a loss of faith in the Cameroonian, or the need to paper over cracks with another veteran stopgap.
