An injury to Yann Sommer could prove to be a decisive moment in whether or not Inter Milan decide to move for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

This according to today’s print edition of Italian sports newspaper Quotidiano Sportivo, via FCInter1908.

In the last few months, Inter have been linked with a shock move for Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 25-year-old’s current contract with PSG runs until the end of June 2026. And as of yet, he has not signed a new deal, and there are no signs that an extension is imminent.

Therefore, there is a feeling that Donnarumma could leave PSG soon.

This could be on a blockbuster free transfer at the end of his deal in the summer of 2026. Or it could be because PSG decide to cash in on him while they have the chance this summer.

Sommer Injury Could Be Decisive For Inter Milan Move For Donnarumma

If Inter were to move for Donnarumma, it would clearly be because they plan to make him the first-choice goalkeeper.

Therefore, the idea would be to make the Italy captain the long-term replacement for Yann Sommer.

However, Inter signed a player for that role already last summer.

Josep Martinez arrived from Genoa. The idea was for the Spaniard to spend this season deputizing for Sommer, and then take over for him in the long term.

As of yet, Martinez has barely gotten a look in at Inter.

But the Spaniard will get his chance. Sommer is set to miss the next few matches with a thumb injury.

That means that Martinez will get a big chance to prove himself as not just a backup but a reliable successor to Sommer.

If Martinez really grabs hold of this opportunity, then Inter would be less likely to move for Donnarumma.

But if the 26-year-old former RB Leipzig keeper underwhelms, it could mean that signing a replacement for Sommer because a priority.

And in that case, Donnarumma could come right back onto the agenda.
