In a transfer move already hailed as pivotal, Victor Gyökeres is set to become Arsenal’s new striker. As Mark Goldbridge announced on That’s Football, “Gyökeres has agreed deal done with Arsenal on personal terms.” The Swedish forward’s expected move from Sporting CP has turned heads, especially with Arsenal set to pay a reported £56 million plus add-ons.
Goldbridge, never short on insight, summed it up clearly: “This is the position. This is the transfer of the summer.” For a side that’s come so close under Mikel Arteta, this is more than just a signing, it’s symbolic. “This is the Arsenal striker that everybody knows they need. So they had to get it right.”
Goldbridge didn’t shy away from the implications this move has for Arsenal and the wider league: “There will be no excuse for Arsenal not to win the league.” While not ruling out Liverpool or Manchester City, he argued that clubs like Arsenal are now “building super squads,” with this transfer just the latest example.
He highlighted the broader context of the Premier League’s financial ecosystem: “If you’re in the Champions League, you’re earning 70 to 100 million pounds more than everybody else.” With Gyökeres in the ranks, Goldbridge believes Arsenal are positioning themselves to dominate both domestically and in Europe.
A major thread throughout the podcast was Goldbridge’s personal enthusiasm for the player. “I think he’s going to be an absolute monster in the Premier League,” he said. Drawing comparisons to English icons, Goldbridge called him “the quintessential Premier League striker,” naming Alan Shearer and Harry Kane as reference points.
“He’s got a physicality to him. He’s also got a speed to him. He’s got a finishing to him. He’s got immense shot power,” he observed. Addressing critics, he added: “It’s not like he’s been playing for Stoke… He’s been playing for Sporting predominantly in an Amorim 3-4-3 system.”
The expectation is not just about adaptation, Goldbridge is calling for impact: “With Gyökeres, I think it’s hit the ground running and away we go.” He even forecasted a top scorer battle: “I’m absolutely convinced he’s going to be a pusher for Haaland for Golden Boot.”

Though Benjamin Sesko had long been linked with Arsenal, Goldbridge credited Arsenal’s technical leadership. “Arteta probably did want Sesko and he’s maybe been persuaded by Berta,” he said. That persuasion, according to Goldbridge, was rooted in urgency: “Arteta’s finished second two or three times. He can’t afford to finish second again.”
It’s a pragmatic approach that reflects modern elite football. “Anybody can flop, but [Gyökeres] is coming in ready to go,” he said, contrasting him with younger prospects who may need “a period of adaption.”
Goldbridge also emphasised how deals like this are creating separation in the league: “I can just see the top four moving further and further away. They’re having fantastic transfer windows.”
