Portugal heads into the World Cup with one of the most talented squads in the world. And while many will focus on the will-he-won’t-he-play saga surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, Paris Saint-Germain striker Gonçalo Ramos could be the Portuguese goalscorer who quietly turns heads during the tournament.

Among many other things, the 2026 World Cup has been billed as a “last dance” for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. And while the two footballing legends are obviously deserving of a farewell tour, both Argentina and Portugal are much more than their twilight phase talismanic icons.

The Portuguese side in particular has one of its strongest squads in years, with established stars like Bruno Fernandes, João Cancelo, and Ronaldo along with rising phenoms like Nuno Mendes, João Neves, and Francisco Conceição.

But one man who could be the key to Portugal’s first ever title is another young talent with a flair for the dramatic that relishes the bright lights: Gonçalo Ramos.

Drawn into a group with DR Congo, Colombia and Uzbekistan, Portugal will likely battle Colombia for the top spot, with the South Americans emerging as a potential dark horse. It’s in this setting that an unsung hero could rise, and Ramos is a name fans should keep a close eye on.

A Breakdown of Gonçalo Ramos

Ramos is a forward who thrives on movement rather than fancy tricks and flicks. He is constantly scanning, drifting between center backs, and timing his runs to exploit even the smallest gaps. What stands out most is his instinct inside the box. Ramos doesn’t need many touches to make an impact.

Whether it’s a quick first-time finish, a sharp near-post run, or a predatory pounce on a loose ball, his game is built on efficiency and anticipation. Ramos is not the type to dominate possession, but he maximizes every opportunity that comes his way.

Off the ball, his work rate is just as valuable as his scoring. Ramos presses aggressively, often leading the defensive line and forcing mistakes high up the pitch. He links play with simple but effective passes, allowing more creative teammates to shine while focusing on positioning himself for the decisive moment. There is a discipline to his game, as he’s able to stretch defenses and create space, but never tries to do too much in his role. That’s what makes him a system friendly striker who can provide both goals and structure.

A Steady Rise

Ramos is no stranger to big clubs. He rose through the youth ranks at Benfica, making his senior debut in 2019. However, it wasn’t until 2021 that he began to see consistent playing time and establish himself within the team.

His true breakout came in 2022, when he scored his first career hat-trick on August 2 in a 4–1 home win over FC Midtjylland during the opening leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. That season, he delivered his best output to date, finishing with 27 goals in 47 appearances.

Ramos also helped Benfica secure the league title, his only major trophy with the club, before earning a move to Paris Saint-Germain, who with the help of fellow Portuguese internationals Mendes, Vitinha, and Neves, has become an even bigger powerhouse.

Since arriving in France, Ramos has recorded 45 goals and 10 assists in 125 appearances, contributing to a trophy haul that includes the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, two domestic league titles, and more. This season, Ramos has alternated between starting and coming off the bench, registering six goals in 25 league matches.

One of his standout moments in Europe came when he scored against FC Barcelona in the Champions League group stage. Under Luis Enrique, he has carved out a role as a reliable and trusted attacking option.

A National Team Mainstay

At the international level, Ramos has steadily become an important contributor for the Portugal national team since making his debut in 2022. Notably, he has scored in every calendar year he has represented the Seleçao, with his most productive spell coming in 2022 when he netted four goals, three of which came in a 6-1 rout of Switzerland in the World Cup round of 16. In that match, he started over Ronaldo, a move that poured gasoline on the discourse wildfire.

Ramos also found the net against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League in 2025, a tournament Portugal went on to win.

Having represented Portugal since the U-17 level, Ramos has become a dependable figure within the national setup. While he may not yet be the biggest name on the team sheet, he is exactly the kind of player Portugal will rely on in a tournament setting. He’s disciplined, efficient, and ready to deliver when it matters most.

Already established at PSG and with World Cup experience under his belt, Ramos is heading into 2026 with a real opportunity to elevate his profile. A strong tournament could not only cement his place on the global stage but also play a key role in Portugal’s push for glory.
