Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Croatia in the World Cup Round of 32 at Toronto Stadium. Ivan Perišić gave Croatia the lead in the 53rd minute with a composed left-footed finish, but Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty at 68 minutes leveled the score before substitute Gonçalo Ramos headed in the winner deep into stoppage time.
VAR proved decisive as three Croatia goals were disallowed for offside, including Petar Sučić's effort at 80 minutes and Joško Gvardiol's strike at 90+13' that would have forced extra time. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Portugal v Croatia.
Rafael Leão delivered the moment that sent Portugal through to face Spain, providing the cross for Gonçalo Ramos's winning header in the 94th minute. His persistence on the left flank created constant problems for Croatia's right side throughout the second half.
At 58 minutes, Leão cut inside onto his right foot and curled a shot that beat Dominik Livaković but crashed back off the crossbar. His willingness to take on defenders and drive at the Croatian backline stretched their defensive shape and created space for teammates.
When Portugal needed a decisive moment in stoppage time, Leão found space wide left and delivered a precise right-footed cross into the six-yard box. His quality in the final third proved the catalyst for the comeback, capping a performance that consistently threatened Croatia's defence.
Gonçalo Ramos produced the defining contribution from the bench, heading in the winner at 90+4' to complete Portugal's comeback. The substitute rose between two defenders to direct Rafael Leão's cross into the bottom corner and send his nation into the Round of 16.
Introduced at 63 minutes as part of Roberto Martínez's quadruple substitution, Ramos provided a fresh focal point in attack. His movement in the box and ability to attack crosses offered Portugal a different dimension as they chased the game.
Rising unmarked between Marin Pongračić and Joško Gvardiol, Ramos timed his leap perfectly to meet Leão's delivery. His match-winning header ensured Martínez's bold substitutions paid immediate dividends, securing a victory that had seemed improbable when Croatia took the lead.
Nikola Vlašić's foul on Renato Veiga inside the box at 66 minutes handed Portugal the equalising penalty that shifted momentum decisively. His grab on the defender during a corner gave referee Espen Eskås a clear decision after VAR review.
The error came at the worst possible time for Croatia, who had been in control since Perišić's opener. By conceding the spot-kick, Vlašić allowed Cristiano Ronaldo to level the score and breathe life back into Portugal's challenge when the knockout tie had appeared to be slipping away from them.
What had been a disciplined defensive display was undone by one costly moment of judgement. Vlašić's foul proved the turning point of the match, enabling Portugal's comeback and ensuring Croatia's World Cup ended despite dominating spells of the second half and having three goals ruled out.
