Gosens makes emotional Fiorentina farewell as Schalke 04 move confirmed | OneFootball

Gosens bade an emotional farewell to Fiorentina after sealing a move to Schalke 04, leaving amid clear frustration at how his exit unfolded.

According to Football Italia, the deal is a loan with an obligation to buy for around €2.5m plus add-ons, taking him to the club he supported as a child.

Before the switch, the full-back had been frozen out, told not to report for pre-season and informed he was not in new coach Fabio Grosso’s plans, despite being under contract until June 2028.

In his farewell message, he described the end as unexpected and painful, saying he had given everything on and off the pitch and behaved fairly. He felt he deserved the chance to fight for his place but saw no realistic prospect, and leaves with gratitude to team-mates, staff, fans and owner Rocco Commisso.

Gosens turned 32 earlier this month and has spent most of his career in Italy. The Germany international joined Atalanta in 2017, moved to Inter, had a brief spell with Union Berlin, then returned to Serie A with Fiorentina in the summer of 2024.
