Gotham FC vs Washington Spirit: How to watch, time, more of NWSL Championship

To the shock of many, NJ/NY Gotham FC is in the NWSL Championship for the second time in three years. First, they upset the top-seeded Kansas City Current that nobody, except for the Bats and some of their fans, saw coming. Then, they beat the Orlando Pride, which saw a great last-minute free kick from Jaedyn Shaw, and an incredible last-second save by Ann-Katrin Berger secured the team a spot in the finals.
As such, Gotham FC will face the Washington Spirit to see who will lift the trophy. The Spirit ended the season in second place with 44 points, eight more than the NJ/NY side. So, like the other matches, this will be another fixture that will have to end in an upset if the ladies want to win their second NWSL Championship. It will also be another “road” game in a way, but at the same time, it is not considered that.
Both the Spirit and the Bats had to travel out to San Jose since the championship will be played at PayPal Park, which is the home of Bay FC. The NWSL has been having the final at chosen stadiums, so this is nothing new. And since Bay is not playing, it makes the stadium a neutral site. It is unfortunate that the teams had to travel far away from both sets of fans. Yes, the match would have been in Washington, D.C. if the league had not utilized a chosen site, but fans around the league would have preferred that.
Meanwhile, Gotham, who struggled against Washington in 2024, has not lost to the team this year. They had the fantastic road win earlier in the season, and the last two games, playing in the NWSL and the CONCACAF W Champions Cup, ended in 0-0 draws. Therefore, it would not be crazy to think that this could go into extra time.

This is it. This is the last game of the season for Gotham FC. In complete honesty, while it would be great for them to win, just making the championship match after an up-and-down regular season is an accomplishment in itself. Plus, the Bats already have one trophy this year from the Champions Cup and will be up for the same trophy again in the spring. Plus, they have a chance to win the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup at the beginning of 2026. It would not be world-ending if Gotham failed to win. But, of course, winning would be amazing.
