NJ/NY Gotham FC's quest to defend their CONCACAF W Champions Cup title has come to an end as they lost 4-1 to Club América Femenil in the semifinals. This is the first time the team has lost by three or more goals since April 22, 2025, when they lost to Portland Thorns FC also by a score of 4-1.
This was a disappointing showing from Gotham FC, who were far from their best in this match. There were plenty of external factors that played a role in this loss, but at the end of the day, they just did not play well enough over the course of the 90 minutes to warrant a victory. They have two more games before the summer World Cup break, and they will look to flush away this game and end this first part of the season on a high.
For Club América, what a great performance. The club certainly wanted revenge after losing in this same fixture 12 months ago and managed to do so emphatically. They countered Gotham incredibly well and executed incredibly well on almost all of their chances. They needed as close to a perfect game in order to advance to the final, and they delivered.
This certainly was not the ending to Gotham's title defense that many expected. Not just losing in the semifinals, but losing as convincingly as they did. As mentioned, they will look to regroup in these last two games before the break, then use the time off to hopefully get healthier and figure out how best to attack the second half of the season.
Both teams got off to a fast start, flashing dangerous balls into each other's boxes. América got on the board first, though. In the 21st minute, on the counter-attack, former Gotham FC forward Geyse found Scarlett Camberos in the box with the forward scoring first time to give the Mexican side a 1-0 lead.
The Bats held on into halftime, but in stoppage time of the first half, goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger collided with Camberos and had to be taken off the field on a backboard with Shelby Hogan taking her place to begin the second half.
To begin the second half, it looked like Gotham may have found their mojo as Esther González, who had a really poor first half, first had a trio of shots either saved or blocked in quick succession in the opening minute. Two minutes later, she equalized for her club. A first-time reverse through ball from Shaw found González, who scored on a powerful cross-goal shot. This was Shaw's fifth consecutive game in all competitions with a goal contribution and her sixth in her last seven games.
The tie would only last for another 10 minutes as América regained the lead, and once more it came off a counterattack. Geyse found Camberos, who scored to get her second of the night.
Gotham then had a chance to equalize three minutes later as Shaw found herself in some space on the top of the box before laying it off to Guro Reiten. The Norwegian took time on her left, but it was a really poor finish as it went weakly wide of the goal.
That would prove to be a pivotal point in the game, as just eight minutes later América scored their third. Tierna Davidson had a clearance deep in her own half blocked and pounced on by Geyse, who completed her hat-trick of assists this time playing provider for Aylin Aviléz for América's third.
The Mexican side was not done, and scored once more to get their fourth in the 89th minute as another Gotham giveaway eventually resulted in second-half sub Khyah Harper fouling América forward Sarah Luebbert in the box, conceding a penalty. Camberos stepped up and secured the dominant performance to complete her hat-trick and seal América's 4-1 victory.
Replays, however, showed the contact came outside of the box, and a penalty kick should not have been called. But there is no VAR in this competition, which means the play could not be reviewed. Regardless, though, this was probably Gotham's worst overall performance for a number of years. The altitude definitely played a factor, but there were still plenty of poor passes, bad giveaways, and just overall pretty sloppy play that was reminiscent of how they played in the first few games of the season.
They now enter the third-place game on Saturday night against either the Washington Spirit or C.F. Pachuca Femenil. And given there is not really anything at stake in this match, there is a chance that the Bats will play a bunch of their younger players and rest a lot of their starters in preparation for their final NWSL game before the summer break on the 31st against the Houston Dash.
The Gotham FC players and coaching staff know that the game was not good enough, and while some of that was not in their control, a lot of it was simple mistakes that can't happen again, but are easy to correct.
