The sale and consumption of low-alcohol drinks at the Supertaça in Coimbra is a one-off pilot authorised only for Saturday's match, the Government said, and it will assess the results.
The authorisation follows a Portuguese Football Federation proposal and is framed as responsible preparation for the 2030 World Cup, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco. It will test, under tightly controlled conditions, a regulated regime for the sale, distribution and consumption of alcoholic beverages in sports venues.
The approval covers today’s FC Porto v Torreense Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira match. Alcohol sales in sports venues have been prohibited since the 1980s.
The review will use objective criteria, including any relevant police occurrences, disciplinary incidents and emergency medical interventions. It will also consider compliance with sales and consumption rules, the provision of adequate non-alcoholic alternatives and advertising restrictions, with technical input from the Instituto para os Comportamentos Aditivos e as Dependências (ICAD).
Any similar initiatives in football or other sports would depend on the results, on assessment by the bodies involved and on their relevance to 2030 preparations, with the safety of events, consumer protection and public health safeguarded.
The 48th edition pits national champions FC Porto against Torreense, winners of the Taça de Portugal, at Estádio Cidade de Coimbra at 20:15. André Narciso, from the Setúbal association, will referee.
