Graham Potter has been named as the new manager of the Swedish men’s national team, marking a return to the country where his coaching career first rose to prominence.

The 50-year-old has signed a short-term deal that will initially cover the remainder of Sweden’s World Cup qualification campaign, with an automatic extension if the team progresses.

Potter replaces Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed last week after a 1-0 defeat to Kosovo left Sweden with just one point from their first four qualifiers and on the brink of elimination from Group B.

Despite their struggles, Sweden are in contention for a play-off place thanks to their performance in the 2024-25 Nations League, where they topped their group.

Potter said he was honoured to lead Sweden at such a critical time, describing the role as both ‘humbling’ and ‘inspiring’.

He expressed confidence in the squad’s talent and promised to ‘create the conditions’ for the team to perform at their highest level in pursuit of World Cup qualification.

Swedish Football Association chairman Simon Astrom praised the appointment, calling Potter ‘a strong and experienced leader who has been tested at the highest level’.

The appointment is Potter’s first role since leaving West Ham United in September following a poor start to the Premier League season.

The Hammers had suffered five defeats in six games, leaving them in the relegation zone, and Potter’s record stood at six wins in 23 matches since taking charge in January.

However, his reputation in Sweden remains strong. During seven years with Ostersunds FK from 2011 to 2018, he masterminded the club’s extraordinary rise from the fourth tier to the top flight.

Following his success in Scandinavia, Potter enjoyed spells in England with Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea before his brief stint at West Ham.

He will begin work immediately, preparing for crucial qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia in November.
