Sweden head coach Graham Potter has again defended leaving Benfica full-back Samuel Dahl out of his latest squad, describing it as a purely sporting call ahead of the meeting with Ukraine. The stance came despite recent praise from Benfica manager José Mourinho.
According to Glorioso 1904, Potter said he had already addressed the question at his previous press conference and stressed there was nothing negative about the player. He added that he is satisfied with his current options and that tough choices are part of the job.
Mourinho responded respectfully to the selection, while highlighting Dahl’s remarkable consistency, notable improvement, and reliability in defence alongside steady attacking output.
When the squad was announced, Potter acknowledged the call was difficult and opted for Elliot Stroud for that role, citing the Mjallby defender’s recent performances.
Dahl, valued at €12 million, has made 46 appearances for Benfica this season, across 26 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, 13 in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. He has logged 3,967 minutes with two goals and two assists.
