Ankergren will fill the gap left by Xavi Valero’s departure

West Ham are in advanced talks to hire Casper Ankergren as their new goalkeeping coach.

A deal is yet to be finalised but conversations between Ankergren, West Ham and his current employers, the Danish club Brondby, are ongoing, and there is confidence that his arrival will be confirmed ahead of the new season.

Ankergren was wanted by manager Graham Potter, who worked with him at Brighton. Ankergren was the Seagulls’ goalkeeping coach between 2017 and 2021.

Since 2021, he has been in the same role with Brondby, who, like Brighton, he represented during his playing career.

Ankergren was approached by the Danish media outlet Tipsbladet about the potential move to West Ham earlier this week but refused to comment.

Xavi Valero left his role as West Ham’s goalkeeping coach at the end of the season following seven years in the role and Ankergren is now expected to be hired as his replacement.

Valero said about his exit: “It is with great sadness that I leave West Ham United, but also with great pride and appreciation for the experience of the last seven years.

“Some memories will stay with me always – the magical night at London Stadium against Sevilla and that unforgettable evening in Prague. Moments like that ensure a connection to the Club forever.

“I’m truly grateful for the time I have been given to share with the West Ham family, which is now my own. I leave east London proud of what I have contributed and wishing the Club the very best in the future.”
