The Whites struck after 25 minutes in unusual fashion, Lukas Nmecha spotting Melker Ellborg out of position and squeezing in from 40 yards. Sunderland’s best first-half opening fell to Brian Brobbey, who scuffed Reinildo’s cross.

Leeds made six changes at half-time, with Sunderland rotating most of their side around the hour. Half-chances followed for Daniel James and Anton Stach as the game broke up, but the defence stayed organised.

Ratings: Alex Cairns 6, alert without serious tests, one routine late save, long distribution not always accurate. Joe Rodon 7, took a heavy challenge from Brobbey, supported forward play, strong in the air. Sebastiaan Bornauw 7, not always assured in possession early on but solid overall, used his body well to quell danger.

Tarik Muharemovic 8, sharp in his first 45 minutes, composed on the ball and defended smartly, in control after the interval and read play well. Jayden Bogle 7, advanced regularly and delivered a couple of decent crosses before half-time, energetic and always available. Sean Longstaff 6, busy and willing but could not match his Wrexham display, visibly frustrated with the referee.

Leeds saw it out to preserve the clean sheet and close out a promising outing.
