Granit Xhaka has marked one year since joining Sunderland with a social media message to supporters.
The player said in a post that the year had flown by, expressing gratitude for the journey so far and readiness for the season ahead, which is now less than a month away.
Xhaka arrived at the Stadium of Light on 30 July last year and quickly became a key figure. Sunderland went on to finish seventh in the Premier League, securing Europa League football.
Earlier this summer he appeared a candidate for a surprise exit, with newly appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso identifying the 33-year-old midfielder as a priority target. Xhaka ultimately chose to remain on Wearside.
Head coach Regis Le Bris has since drawn a line under the subject, praising Xhaka’s captaincy and leadership and underlining his desire to stay.
