Granit Xhaka marks Sunderland anniversary with message to supporters after staying on Wearside | OneFootball

Granit Xhaka marked the first anniversary of his Sunderland move with a message to supporters on social media.

The player said in a post that he was grateful for the progress and eager for the campaign ahead, sharing a collage soundtracked by Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling in Love.

The Swiss midfielder joined the Stadium of Light on 30 July last year and became a key figure as Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League, securing Europa League qualification.

Earlier this summer it looked as though he could make a shock departure, with newly appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso targeting him, but the 33-year-old opted to remain on Wearside.

Head coach Regis Le Bris has since said the matter is closed, praising Xhaka’s leadership and stating that he loves the club, wants to stay and is a good captain.
