Granit Xhaka’s recent comments on his Sunderland future have fresh weight after reports linked the captain with Chelsea, with some claiming personal terms were agreed and contact made.
“I’m not even thinking about a transfer. I’m really happy to finally have a summer without any speculation about my future. This allows me to fully focus on the World Cup.”
He told Blick earlier this month.
“To be honest, I’m not surprised. If you work hard day in and day out, you can achieve a lot.”
Xhaka joined from Bayer Leverkusen last summer on a deal to 2028 and now captains Régis Le Bris’ side. He played a key part in securing unexpected Europa League qualification.
“It’s a bit like home for me. The city feels like Basel. Like the St. Johann district where I grew up. You can only perform at your best when you feel comfortable in a place.”
