Gregory on Magpies' run-in: 'The only thing we can control is what we do' | OneFootball

Gregory, who joined the club in January 2024, had prior experience playing as a wing-back for the Tartan Army and while it was far less common at club level, it was still something she would never have shied away from in black and white.

The 23-year-old has racked up 23 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies this season in what has been a campaign marked by doing whatever is necessary for the good of the club.

"Every footballer wants to be getting consistent minutes," Gregory told newcastleunited.com ahead of Sunday's trip to Bristol City Women (kick-off 2pm BST). "Then being able to take that run of form into the upcoming games for club and country is huge.

"Ultimately, for me, I just want to be playing football here - whatever role that looks like, I'll do it. Whether that's coming off the bench or starting games, I just want to be helping the team to achieve our goals, and that goes for Newcastle and Scotland."

After some cameo appearances off the bench in recent times, a shift to a new three at the back formation saw Gregory called upon to be deployed as a left wing-back.

After plying most of her trade in the WSL and WSL2 as a winger with a taste for goal contributions, United's number 11 has enjoyed every second of her more unique role as of late.

"When I first played there, it was just about what we needed against a specific opponent and how we could best exploit their gaps, and obviously, I've got experience playing at wing-back with Scotland.

"I really love playing as both a wing-back and a winger. I think playing as a wing-back suits my attributes a little bit more in terms of being able to get up and down because I enjoy being in both boxes and joining in with the play.

"Whether that's playing out from the back or joining in with attacks down the wing, I enjoy it, and it's been good that I've been able to practise that wing-back role here.

"I want to be constantly improving because I know that I've still got levels that I want to go to. I'm still quite young, so for me, wherever I'm playing, I want to be striding forward and progressing."

With just two games in the WSL2 season Newcastle are still, mathematically, in the hunt for promotion to the WSL via a play-off, but it would require Crystal Palace Women dropping points.

Despite their reliance on another team's results, Gregory knows United must hold up their own end of the bargain before even thinking of what else may happen over the next two weekends.

"The only thing we can control is what we do, so for us, it's about achieving what we can in these final two games and trying to come away with six points, and then the rest is out of our hands.

"We need to be maximising our performances in these two games and executing what we know we're capable of doing to put us in the best possible position."
