Grêmio have acknowledged delays in salary and image-rights payments to the squad and set a deadline to clear the arrears. According to Globo.com, the club have targeted next week to settle the outstanding sums.
Vice-president of football Rafael Lima said the matter had been resolved internally and that all outstanding sums would be paid. The overdue amounts include wages, image rights and signing-on fees.
The club plan to use proceeds from the sale of Viery to Fiorentina to meet obligations. The deal is worth €15 million, R$ 88.5 million, with a possible further €two million, R$ 11.8 million, in performance-related add-ons.
Facing financial strain, the hierarchy shifted recruitment mid-season and have not matched the early-season outlay, about R$ 100 million on Nardoni, Perez, Tetê and Enamorado.
In this cost-control drive, the club opted not to renew captain and midfielder Arthur. Football spending in the opening months reached a little over R$ 30 million per month, covering salaries, signing-on fees, charges and image rights.
