Grêmio and Willian are close to agreeing a mutual contract termination, with talks advancing in recent days and a resolution possible this week.
According to Globo.com, the 38-year-old’s deal runs until December, and the club owes him signing-on fees. The agreement will set out how the undisclosed sums are paid.
Relatives have begun farewells in Porto Alegre. While he has yet to fix a new club, his family are expected to return to England. His aim is to continue playing abroad.
Willian was told late last month that he is not in the coaching staff’s plans. He last featured on 17 July, a 2-1 defeat to Mirassol in the Brasileirão.
He was then named for the trip to Bolívar in the Sudamericana but did not get on the pitch. Since then he has not been selected and has trained only at CT Luiz Carvalho.
The former Corinthians and Brazil international joined Grêmio in September last year as part of an experienced intake to bolster a relegation fight, alongside Arthur, Marcos Rocha, Balbuena and Carlos Vinicius.
He made 22 appearances, scoring one and creating two. Grêmio is the eighth club of his career, after spells with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, Anzhi in Russia, Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham in England, and Olympiacos in Greece.
