According to Globo.com, Grêmio’s hierarchy blamed the officiating for the 2-1 loss to Palmeiras, and vice-president Antônio Dutra Junior said the CBF’s refereeing professionalisation amounts to paying salaries for incompetence.
Dutra argued Pedro Gabriel did not foul Fláco Lopez in the first half, a decision that led to the set piece for Marlon Freitas’ first goal.
His other chief grievance, also raised by coach Luís Castro, concerned Palmeiras’ second goal. He said a member of Palmeiras’ technical staff fed the ball to Giay for a throw-in rather than using the pitchside supports, and that the staffer even hurdled an advertising board to hurry the restart. Marlon Freitas then made it 2-1.
He also questioned the refusal to award a penalty for Amuzu after contact from Giay in the second half. Referee Bruno Arleu de Araújo judged it shoulder to shoulder and allowed play to continue. He maintained much of the result was directly tied to the officiating and lamented the lack of VAR intervention.
TV analyst PC Oliveira said there was no penalty, that a foul occurred before Palmeiras scored, and that the build-up to Grêmio’s goal was irregular.
In January, CBF introduced fixed salaries for 20 referees, 40 assistants and 12 VAR officials in the first year. Hired as legal entities, officials are required to prioritise refereeing rather than work exclusively. Fixed pay varies by category, and they also receive match fees and performance bonuses.
