Dortmund won each of the previous five home games against Union Berlin, but the momentum isn’t on their side after a shocking defeat to VfL Bochum. Meanwhile, the Irons scored four unanswered goals in their last trip to TSG Hoffenheim.

Niko Kovac brought back Ramy Bensebaini in place of January signing Daniel Svensson, while Gio Reyna and Maximilian Beyer also returned to the starting XI. Steffen Baumgart also made three changes, including a move to restore Dortmund loanee Tom Rothe at left-back.

But, it was the former Union fullback Julian Ryerson who started the game on the right track. The Norwegian played Pascal Groß for Dortmund’s first real chance before instigating Karim Adeyemi’s attempt with a corner-kick.

Unsurprisingly, it was also his ambitious effort that led to Dortmund’s opening goal. Diogo Liete beats his own goalkeeper with an ill-timed interception to Ryerson’s harmless effort. Ryerson, who scored Dortmund’s goal in their 2-1 defeat at Alten Försterei, was unplayable in the first half hour from the right flank.

Five minutes before half-time, the hosts doubled their advantage through the usual suspect. Serhou Guirassy provided a simple finish after great work from Bensebaini and Groß to win back possession. They even had a chance for a third goal before the break, but Frederik Rønnow kept his ground.

The Guinea international had two more chances inside the first ten minutes of the second-half as Dortmund looked to put the game to bed. Eventually, Guirassy did get his 11th league goal of the season after Union’s inability to clear their lines.

Like his first goal for Dortmund’s striker, Groß provides the assist. And, five minutes later, Guirassy bagged his hat-trick. Beier’s unselfish play helped the 28-year-old to score his third Bundesliga treble.

But that wasn’t all. Groß played one more assist for the lethal striker as Guirassy scored his career-first quartet. Before the end, Groß also picked up his fourth assist of the game as he tied up Beier’s first goal in Westfalenstadion in 2025.
