Guarani-MG marked April Fools’ Day by pretending to sign Marcelo Moreno, before confirming in the same post that it was only a prank, according to Globo.com. The Módulo 2 side teased supporters on social media.

The announcement praised the striker’s South American pedigree and said he would add leadership and goals for the Campeonato Mineiro Módulo 2 campaign, then told fans to relax because it was 1 April.

Moreno announced his retirement in 2024 but has recently returned, choosing to play for free for Oriente Petrolero, the Bolivian club where he began his career.

He left Oriente Petrolero in 2004 to join Vitória’s youth ranks at 17. In Brazil he later featured for Grêmio, Flamengo and Cruzeiro, where he had three spells, the last ending in 2021.

The forward also played in China, Ukraine, Germany and England. After leaving Cruzeiro he moved to Cerro Porteño, then to Independiente del Valle, his final club in 2023.

He made his last Bolivia appearance in 2023 and remains the nation’s record scorer with 31 goals and record appearance holder with 108 caps.

Guarani-MG begin their Módulo 2 campaign on 30 May against Boa Esporte at the Melão in Varginha, kick-off 10:30. They will also face Patrocinense, Caldense, Mamoré and Uberaba.
