Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that the door would be open for Jack Grealish to make a potential return to the club.

The former £100m man joined Everton on loan this summer, where he has impressed so far.

“Listen, I don’t know,” Guardiola answered on the possibility of Grealish rejoining his squad. “I think he has a contract, one more year, two more years with us.

“The most important thing is he’s back, he’s playing, he’s a massive influence in Everton’s game, he’s there.

“After what happens, maybe Manchester City will want him back. I don’t know.

“Many things are still going to happen. It’s about the clubs, the agents, of course the manager is involved, but especially the clubs. We will see.”

The Englishman spent four years at the Etihad and was a key player in the treble campaign.

However, after two years of a lack of game time and fitness issues, Grealish has rediscovered his best form in the opening weeks of this season, landing the Premier League’s Player of the Month award in August.

Guardiola continued: “The important thing is he’s playing again. A lot of minutes. This is the stature of this player.

“At the end, he has to feel, he said it perfectly, he has to feel alive, he has to feel the butterflies before the game. This kind of passion to play football that every player needs.

“I’m happy, really, really, honestly, that he’s back and trying his best.”

Grealish will be ineligible to face his parent club as the Toffees travel to the Etihad this Saturday. Ahead of the match, City’s boss also cast doubt over the future of another England international.

John Stones is now into his tenth year with the club and is City’s longest serving player. “Don’t ask me about that,” Guardiola replied when asked about the defender’s contract situation.

“Don’t ask me about that. The club will decide what is the best from John and see how he performs.

“When John is fit, he has been part of the starting XI or part of the group. The year of the treble he was unbelievable.

“Since then, there has not been this consistency in games. He’s been injured many, many times. So that’s why we have to wait and see.”
