Ilkay Gündogan questioned the VAR call that ruled out Jonathan Tah’s extra-time header as Germany fell to Paraguay on penalties in the World Cup Round of 32.
According to BuLi News, the 82-cap retired international posted on X after the match, saying the team display needed no sugarcoating and asking what that VAR decision was. He added that, in the Premier League, something like that would draw little more than a weary smile, especially when overturning an on-field call.
The flashpoint came in the first period of extra time, when Waldemar Anton appeared to loosely obstruct the Paraguay goalkeeper before Tah headed in at the back post. The goal was then overturned following review.
Even so, Gündogan accepted Germany’s part in the outcome, calling it brutally disappointing and acknowledging they failed to convince across 120 minutes.
Former national team figures have begun to react, with Gündogan among those expressing frustration at the call while accepting Germany did not do enough.
