Guillermo Ochoa has retired at 41 after appearing at a sixth and final World Cup in 2026, matching the record held with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

L'Équipe reports that the Mexico goalkeeper announced his decision on Tuesday, closing a career across nine clubs and seven countries. He won 154 caps for the national team.

In a message on social media, he said he had given everything for club and country and was now hanging up his gloves.

At the 2026 tournament, unlike Ronaldo and Messi who featured throughout, he came on in the 78th minute of Mexico’s final group game, already qualified. Mexico won 2-0 against Czech Republic at the Azteca.

He was in the 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa but did not play.

The Guadalajara native, an international since 2005, began his career in Mexico in 2004 and most recently played for AEL Limassol in Cyprus. He also had spells with AC Ajaccio in France, and in Spain, Belgium, Italy and Portugal.

He was the first and only Mexican nominated for the 2007 Ballon d’Or, finishing 30th with 1 point. His reflex shot-stopping made him a star at Brazil 2014 in a 0-0 draw with the hosts, then again in 2018 as Mexico beat Germany 1-0.
