Gunnar Aursnes has hailed son Fredrik’s recall to Norway’s 2026 World Cup squad, the Benfica midfielder returning after stepping away from international duty in 2023 for personal reasons.

Speaking to NRK, he described the moment as absolutely fantastic, noting that few players get such a chance and that it means a great deal to them as parents.

Benfica’s number eight is set for a comeback on the biggest stage, with Norway back at a World Cup for the first time in 28 years.

Andreas Schjelderup has also been selected by Stale Solbakken after a breakthrough season at Benfica, registering 10 goals and 7 assists to earn a place at his first major international tournament.

Norway’s squad includes Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard.

For Benfica in 2025/26, Aursnes has made 49 appearances across league, Champions League and domestic cups, totalling 4,088 minutes with four goals and eight assists.
