This Blades pair could follow Gus Hamer out of the exit door at Bramall Lane this summer

Sheffield United haven't had a season to remember, as whilst Chris Wilder has rescued the Blades from the threat of relegation, their chances of breaking into the play-offs in the latter stages of the campaign are slim.

Former Reading and Hull City boss Ruben Selles oversaw Sheffield United's summer transfer business, with the Spaniard installed as the new boss at Bramall Lane following the dismissal of Chris Wilder after their play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

To say that it was a successful window would be a blatant lie, with over £20 million spent on incomings only for their performances and results to take a drastic downturn.

Selles was dismissed after just six games, and Wilder returned for his third separate stint in the Bramall Lane dugout, with the club on course to finish in and around mid-table.

It's a disappointing outcome, to say the least, for a club which was one game away from the Premier League less than a year ago and will now likely have to sell this summer to raise funds after their parachute payments have run out.

It was reported back in December by Pete O'Rourke that, should the Blades fail to obtain promotion, Dutch talisman Gustavo Hamer would likely leave the club.

If that is true, then the 28-year-old is almost certainly on his way out this summer, as FLW takes a look at two other players who could follow him out of the exit door.

Alex Matos

English midfielder Alex Matos joined the Blades in the summer from Premier League side Chelsea permanently, having made two first-team appearances for the Blues, and spent the previous couple of seasons on loan in the Championship with Huddersfield Town and Oxford United.

One of many arrivals under Selles, Matos was initially thrust into the side under the Spaniard, but following his departure and Wilder's re-appointment, he has seen his game time slashed, making just eight league appearances all season and none this year.

Still just 21 and under contract until the summer of 2028, there is more than enough time for Matos to rescue his Blades career, though it is unlikely in any instance that he will be playing his football in the club's first-team next season.

A loan exit seems the most likely route given his age and potential, though a permanent switch at this stage cannot be ruled out should an acceptable bid arrive for him during the summer.

Matos' time in South Yorkshire has not yet gone to plan, and with little time to make an impact this campaign, his future at Bramall Lane is in doubt.

Tahith Chong

Another summer signing under Selles, Curacao winger Tahith Chong joined Sheffield United from Luton Town following the Hatters' relegation to League One.

The 26-year-old had previously shone for Birmingham City in the Championship a few seasons prior, and would become a regular for Luton during their one and only Premier League campaign.

However, he would suffer back-to-back relegations with the Hatters, in what has been a rough few years for the winger.

Upon his move to South Yorkshire, it was hoped that he could reignite his career, but so far, that couldn't be further from the case, with his minutes being severely limited under Wilder.

When on the pitch, he has done little to convince Wilder that he should be starting on the right flank over Andre Brooks, and as a result, has been left either on the bench or out of the squad entirely more often than not.

With his game time taking a serious hit this year, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Chong one of a number of exits from Bramall Lane this summer.
