Gustavo Álvarez has explained his departure from San Lorenzo, citing pressure over squad planning for the second half of the season. His tenure ended on Monday 22 June, the day pre-season was due to begin.
According to SuperDepor.com, he set out his reasons in a public letter hours later, flagging differences with the hierarchy and calling for deep restructuring. He said new procedures are needed and past commitments still constrain decisions.
The flashpoint was squad planning. He listed three priorities, keep the core despite sales, replace departures with similar calibre signings, and promote academy players over those deemed expendable.
He said a single list of 11 expendables, with no youngsters, was unanimously approved by the coaching staff, the Football Council and the Professional Football Subcommittee on Thursday 18 June.
On Saturday 20 June at night he was told to alter three names due to external pressure. He refused and said it was best he left. On Sunday a verbal parting was agreed and he was told not to report for Monday training.
He added he stepped aside to avoid potential third-party legal action harming the club in a difficult institutional and economic context. The exit left San Lorenzo without a coach at the start of pre-season and deepened uncertainty.
Álvarez took charge in late March, replacing Damián Ayude, and oversaw 13 matches, with three wins, seven draws and three defeats. Walter Perazzo is now interim while the board assess options for a new head coach.
