Gustavo Varela ‘to join’ Monza in Serie A move | OneFootball

Benfica forward Gustavo Varela, 21, is close to joining Monza in Serie A. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, the Italian club have already secured the striker and final details are expected in the coming days.

Varela spent last season on loan at Gil Vicente, scoring seven goals in 33 matches as a Portugal youth international. That return helped draw Monza’s interest. Financial terms have not been disclosed.

With no room in Marco Silva’s plans for the new campaign, a permanent exit has emerged as the most suitable outcome. The move would keep his development on track in a competitive league.

Monza are also close to adding Ricardo Mangas from Sporting, while Benfica are concentrating solely on Varela’s situation. The Italian side continue to bet on Portuguese talent and see the Benfica forward as a project player with the scope to make his mark in Serie A.

Varela came through Sporting, PAOK and Benfica, and he has one senior appearance for Benfica. PAOK had sought him on loan, but Benfica preferred a sale. Italy now appears to be his next step as he seeks greater prominence.
