France assistant Guy Stéphan condemned racist remarks by a Paraguayan senator aimed at Kylian Mbappé, calling them unworthy, abject and scandalous, according to L'Équipe.

He was speaking after France’s 1-0 win over Paraguay on Saturday in the World Cup last 16, during a 30-minute press conference.

Stéphan said he had not yet had the chance to speak with Mbappé, but set out those three words to characterise the comments.

Mbappé posted on X, describing the senator as a despicable woman unworthy of her office and accusing her of reckless, unapologetic racism.

He wrote that her words had eclipsed the historic World Cup run produced by Paraguay’s players, leaving the worst possible image of their country.
