The transfer rumors surrounding FC Bayern continue to swirl after the 5:1 win against Cologne – and this time Lothar Matthäus of all people brings a prominent name into play: Josko Gvardiol. The record international claims that Munich have already inquired about the Manchester City defensive star.

Immediately after the 5:1 victory against 1. FC Köln and the celebration of the German championship, Lothar Matthäus fueled the rumors about a transfer of Josko Gvardiol to FC Bayern.

Speaking on Sky, he explained: „I have a player in mind and have heard that they are already making initial inquiries [Bayern]. A former Bundesliga player from Leipzig who currently plays for Manchester City, left-back/center-back, Gvardiol.“

The 65-year-old is thus fuelling speculation surrounding a possible transfer of the Croatian international. Gvardiol has been one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe for years and had already been linked with FC Bayern several times during his time at RB Leipzig. The defender finally moved to Manchester City in 2023 for around €90 million.

It comes as no surprise that FC Bayern are still on the lookout for defensive reinforcements. With Konrad Laimer, Minjae Kim and Hiroki Ito, several defenders have been repeatedly linked with a move away. This is where Gvardiol could come into play: The 24-year-old is versatile, physically robust, technically strong and also has enormous qualities in building up play.

High transfer fee could become a problem

His flexibility should be particularly interesting from Bayern’s point of view. Gvardiol can play both as a centre-back and as a left-back – a profile that fits perfectly with the requirements of modern top clubs. In addition, he already knows the Bundesliga very well from his time in Leipzig and would not have to get used to the German environment first.

However, a transfer seems anything but simple. Manchester City have long-term plans for the Croatian, who plays an important role under Pep Guardiola. In addition, the transfer fee is likely to reach enormous dimensions even for Bayern. For this reason alone, a potential deal could be complicated.

It remains to be seen whether the initial „inquiries“ that Matthäus is talking about will actually turn into concrete negotiations, but one thing is clear: should Gvardiol come onto the market at some point, FC Bayern are likely to take a very close look.
