Haitians priced out of the game staged their own World Cup night outside Gillette Stadium, watching Haiti lose 1-0 to Scotland as soaring resale prices kept many out.
The Foxborough arena felt Scottish, while the forecourt carried Haiti's hopes 52 years after their last appearance. More than 40,000 Scotland fans filled Boston and the stadium. As reported by L'Équipe, around 100 gathered at Six Strong, a bar metres from the turnstiles, close enough to hear the roar.
Dave-Lyn, in her thirties, who fled turmoil at home five years ago, said she wanted to share the moment with her children, recalling her father's tales of 1974. She watched from outside with her underage daughter Ann, unable to enter the bar, and heard the roar for Scotland's opener before the big screens showed it.
Inside, her husband and son joined a febrile crowd. Many locals could not afford entry, with tickets still listed at more than $900 minutes before kick-off. Armando, in his twenties, said he had seen seats at $1,600, and even $500 was out of reach. He and five friends still drove for over an hour and paid $100 to park.
Sébastien, a security guard in his twenties who arrived in Boston aged two, wished he had been closer. Boston hosts the country’s third largest Haitian community, about 20,000 in the city and up to 80,000 in the area. Christopher Occean, 32, said they could not attend but wanted to gather, stressing pride in the team.
