Former Premier League forward Hal Robson-Kanu has praised Luke O'Nien after the Sunderland defender helped the club clinch Europa League qualification.

He pointed to O'Nien being released by Watford 12 years ago, dropping into non-league and his father emailing every EFL club until an opportunity arrived. O'Nien has been a defining figure in Sunderland's resurgence, arriving in League One before playing a central role in their return to the Premier League and subsequent European berth.

Signed from Wycombe Wanderers in 2018 as a midfielder, he has since operated at full-back and centre-back. His adaptability and leadership have been central to his influence in the dressing room.
