Hansi Flick has been around the world of football for quite some time now. He has overseen many games as both an assistant, then manager, and has seen the highs and lows that the sport has to offer.

The German manager has been excellent since his arrival at Barcelona, transforming a team of youngsters into a competitive unit that scores goals for fun and can give any team in Europe a run for their money on any given night.

Last night, against Real Sociedad, he stood on the touchline frustrated as the ball simply refused to go in for his side. It bounced off the woodwork, was kept out by Remiro, and, on the occasions when it did go in, it was ruled out, either legally or controversially.

After the game, in his post-match press conference, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Flick revealed that he was happy with how his team played. He said:

“We must continue on this path. I’m happy with the play in recent weeks, and not waste energy on other aspects, like the referee.”

Flick explained why he thought that way. He continued:

“We created many chances, the score doesn’t reflect what we saw. There are days when you invest a lot of energy, and in the end, you’re unlucky. I value what I saw. In some situations, we have to defend better; it’s a process, but I appreciate what I saw.”

The German manager then revealed what he told his players after the defeat. He said:

“I told the players the same; we haven’t been lucky, and now we have to focus on the next game.”

Flick also labelled it “the unluckiest match of his career”. He said:

“Yes, I think this is the unluckiest match of my career.”

Eventually, he closed by highlighting what he thinks his team needs to do better:

“After the 1-1, we were in good shape, playing well, and that goal killed us. Of course, we should have defended better at the start and in the middle, and that’s what we have to correct.”

Hansi Flick will hope never to be part of a game like this again. Barcelona will hope that this was that one game in a season when nothing seems to go their way, irrespective of how much effort they put in.

There is no time to rest for the Catalan club, who have an important Champions League game on the horizon in a few days’ time. Let us hope Barcelona can return to winning ways and continue their upward trajectory from here.
