Barcelona were initially expected to head into the January transfer window trying to sign a replacement for Andreas Christensen.

But the club were soon given the opportunity to bring back former player Joan Cancelo, a right-back, who has reportedly offered himself to Barcelona in a desperate attempt to leave Saudi Arabia.

While the chance to sign Cancelo at a lower cost appears tantalising, Barcelona have made a final decision on this transfer saga.

Hansi Flick is not interested

According to MARCA, Hansi Flick has made it clear that he is not interested in signing Joao Cancelo this month.

Barcelona have collectively made a decision not to pursue the Portuguese international as the club are more focused on signing a centre-back.

The Catalans have also decided not to sign players just for the sake of it. They will also consider signing if the player fits into their plans.

This comes on the back of an earlier report that claimed Joan Laporta will speak to Flick and Deco to discuss the Cancelo saga.

Although the club remain interested in the prospect of signing Cancelo, the player would have to significantly lower his salary in order to join the team. The team, after all, still requires a new right-back, who can serve as a backup for Jules Kounde.

But as far as Cancelo is concerned, his current €15 million package in Saudi Arabia will be impossible to match for Barcelona.

Given Barça’s current wage structure, it is hard to imagine them being able to afford the Portuguese international even if he halves his current salary.

Therefore, it is unlikely Barcelona will be able to pull off a deal to sign the right-back, with the club far more interested in finding a replacement for the injured Andreas Christensen.
