After Barcelona's victory over Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés with a score of 1-0 thanks to a goal by Lamine Yamal, German coach Hansi Flick spoke proudly about the defensive system he employs: the high defensive line, which at the beginning of the current season received a lot of criticism.
The German coach said that this system does not depend directly on the defenders and the defensive line, but rather depends mainly on the team’s attacking system and the high-pressing system as well.
Hansi Flick said.
For Hansi Flick, tactics are less about positioning and more about purpose. Speaking on his system's demands, the coach made clear that the positioning of his defensive line or the identity of the starters matters far less than one central principle: the intensity of the press in the opponent’s half.
The only thing that matters is how we press. If we do it well, the high line works. If there’s no pressing, it’s far too easy to chip the ball in behind us.
Flick added.
