Hansi Flick recently won BILD’s Coach of the Year award and attended a video conference as well. For the Barcelona coach, this award is a good reflection of the sensational season he enjoyed with the team during the last campaign. Moreover, it is good to see him get recognised for it.

During the interview itself, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Flick spoke about various topics that involved his own gratitude after winning the award, and he also addressed the situations of certain individual players.

Speaking about the entire idea behind Joan Garcia’s arrival at the club and what it meant, Hansi Flick gave a very straightforward answer. However, when it comes to internal communication within the club, he confessed that things could have been handled better:

“Now we have a very young and talented goalkeeper like Joan Garcia, who is at a very, very high level. We all decided together that this should be the future of Barça. So, for me, it was clear what our approach was… Did everything go well in terms of communication? I think there’s much to improve, also from my side.”

Speaking on that matter further, Hansi Flick stated that it was important for him that Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and the club put aside their differences moving forward. Still, the Barça coach refused to make any promises to the German goalkeeper once he returns from his ongoing recovery period:

“For me, it is important that Marc and the club have come closer to each other. And that they have sought the right communication. For me, it is important that Marc comes back. He is a top-level goalkeeper, and he has all our support so that he can return to playing at his best level. What can I promise him? No, I don’t make promises.”

As for the award he won, Flick shared his gratitude but also later highlighted that while his Barcelona team has won games so far during the current season, he has not been fully convinced by the performances:

“I am very happy to receive it as a representative of my coaching staff. It’s a great award we have received. So thank you very much… The season is going well in terms of points, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied yet. However, in the last game, after being 2-0 down, we scored three goals and took the three points. That, of course, was something good, and it gives us confidence for the upcoming matches.”

He also chose to praise Barça sensation Lamine Yamal, who Flick believes could eventually become one of the best players that football has ever seen:

“I don’t think players can be compared. Lamine is a true genius. Especially at his age, at 18, he decides games on his own. He is on the right path. Also, he is very intelligent. But of course, he is still very young at 18, and he has to learn from others. We support him. I am convinced that he will be one of the best players the world of football has ever seen.”

Lastly, he made sure to give credit to his staff and shared his own belief in the philosophy that he wants his team to play with:

“I am very convinced of what I can do. It’s always like this: you have a coaching staff that always supports you. As head coach, you are on the front line. You get criticized, but you also get praised accordingly. Those are the things that happen. But you have a coaching staff around you that does an excellent job. I have that here in Barcelona. It’s simply a lot of fun to work with these people. And seeing the players every day motivates you.”

Moving forward, both Flick and Barça will be hoping to continue their fine form. However, the Catalan giants will also look to improve their performances throughout the games they play, as there have been some questionable displays recently.
