World Cup visitors landing in Miami find more than the Dolphins’ home. Hard Rock Stadium anchors the F1 Miami Grand Prix and mirrors Le Mans’ Stade Marie-Marvingt, ringed by racetracks. It is not Inter Miami’s ground, despite eight-time Ballon d'Or Lionel Messi, it is the Miami Dolphins’ NFL base.

According to L'Équipe, since 2022 a 5.412 km, 19-corner circuit snakes around the venue, using its car parks and access roads. The paddock sits on the same turf now staging World Cup matches.

The layout mimics a city backdrop, hence a painted fake marina. Built in the 1980s and overhauled in 2015, it sits not in Miami but in Miami Gardens, created in 2003, from several former localities.

The area has been reshaped as the stadium attracts major events. Residents, largely black, were not officially told when owner Joe Robbie proposed the site in 1985, then called Carol City.

That grievance stiffened demands for self-rule. In 2003 Miami Gardens became a large majority-black city, electing an all-black council.

Two decades on, Hard Rock Stadium is embedded in the city and a valued municipal partner. Many long-time locals still say Carol City.

If Argentina top their group, they will play their round of 16 here. Otherwise, to see Lionel Messi, wait a few weeks and drive about 20 minutes north to Fort Lauderdale, Inter Miami’s year-round home, still not really Miami.
